Know when your weapon has an intermittent fault

Animation showing how the ProTip signals an intermittent fault in a foil

ProTip indicates when a foil, epee or bodywire has an intermittent fault that could trigger the scoring equipment but might not show up on a multimeter. You can set the tester to beep when the circuit is broken.

A faulty weapon can be a big distraction during a bout. You are sure that you got the touch, but the box disagrees and the referee awards a point to your opponent. Stopping, changing weapons, getting out of the zone. Wouldn't it be better to go into every match knowing that your sword is in its best shape.

Spot faults early

Lots of faults are indicated by high resistance in your equipment:

  • Pinched wires at the guard that are about to fail.
  • An epee contact spring that's got a bit short won't make as clean contact as it could.
  • Dirty foil tips that produce errant off-target lights when the blade is beat.
  • Dirt in the epee guard socket that can cause glancing blows on the guard to register when they should not.
  • Dirty epee tips that don't register on some marginal touches when they should.

Like a regular fencing tester, ProTip will show continuity through your foil, sabre or epee. Unlike a regular fencing tester, it will also measure the resistance in the weapon and wire which helps you spot these faults. On top of this, intermittent faults caused by breaks in the wires or connections are highlighted so you can spot them easily.

Fix your kit before it costs you points.

Compact and tough

ProTip is compact enough to fit into your pocket and tough enough to survive in your fencing bag. The stainless steel front panel doubles as a contact to let you test epee guard earthing or the clip on your foil body wire.
